ISO 6722
Defines dimensions, test methods, and requirements for single-core cables intended for use in road vehicle applications where the nominal system voltage does not exceed 60 V DC or 25 V AC.
Wall Thickness Classes
ISO 6722 categorizes wire by insulation thickness. Modern vehicles push towards ultra-thin walls to save weight and space.
- Thick Wall (Type 1): Older legacy vehicles. High abrasion resistance, very heavy.
- Thin Wall (Type 2): Typical modern automotive wire (e.g., FLRY-B).
- Ultra-Thin Wall (Type 3): Emerging in high-density EV architectures. Requires highly controlled routing to prevent chafe.
Temperature Classes
Wires are rated from Class A (-40 to 85°C) up to Class H (-40 to 175°C). Selecting a Class A wire for an engine bay harness will result in catastrophic failure.
